Peer Leadership and Student Programming
Peer Leadership and Student Programming
Students learn as much from each other as they do from adults. PUFSD invests in peer leadership as a core feature of its student support work, creating structured opportunities for students to lead, mentor, connect, and build the kind of school community they want to be part of.

Sources of Strength is a nationally recognized, evidence-based peer leadership program focused on suicide prevention and mental health promotion. Rather than focusing on risk factors, Sources of Strength builds on the protective factors already present in students' lives, such as healthy relationships, community connection, spirituality, generosity, healthy activities, family support, and positive future thinking.
At PUFSD, student leaders are trained to spread messages of hope and connection throughout the school community. The program is built on a simple but powerful premise: when young people believe that help is available and that life has meaning, they are more resilient in the face of adversity.

Upstanders' Week is an annual school-wide event that brings the upstander concept to life beyond the classroom. Students participate in assemblies, activities, and peer-led conversations that reinforce a shared commitment to speaking up, standing with others, and taking responsibility for the culture of our school.
The week is connected directly to the SEL curriculum, where students in every grade explore the difference between a bystander and an upstander and practice the skills needed to act with courage and empathy.

PUFSD partners with the JCK Foundation to bring programming to both middle and high school students. The JCK Foundation's work focuses on teen mental health and suicide prevention, supporting young people in building the resilience, coping skills, and connections that protect against crisis. Programming is integrated into advisory periods at PMS and PHS.

Pace University Center for Well-Being PUFSD students participate in the Pace University Center for Well-Being Fair, connecting with resources and professionals focused on mental health, wellness, and community support. This partnership reflects our commitment to connecting students and families to resources that extend beyond our school walls.
HHREC High School Visit Middle school students visit Pleasantville High School through the HHREC program, building familiarity with the high school environment and strengthening cross-building relationships before students make the formal transition. This visit is part of a broader strategy of intentional transitions across all grade levels.

Unity Day is PUFSD's participation in the national anti-bullying awareness campaign, bringing students, staff, and families together around a shared commitment to kindness, inclusion, and belonging.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation's longest-running drug prevention awareness campaign. At PUFSD, Red Ribbon Week involves classroom activities and community-building exercises that help students explore values, make healthy choices, and understand the role of personal responsibility in building a positive future.
